- In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 80 perimenopausal women aged 40-55 (73 completed), 300 mg/day of standardized Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) root extract (SRI-81) for eight weeks significantly improved menopausal symptom scores on the Menopause Rating Scale compared with placebo.
- Total MRS scores decreased 42.6% from baseline in the shatavari group versus 5.5% in the placebo group; perceived stress scores declined almost 30% from baseline, and hot-flash scores decreased 26% versus 7% with placebo.
- Shatavari supplementation was also associated with improvements in fatigue and vigor measures.
- No adverse events were reported during the trial; liver and kidney function markers remained stable across the eight weeks.
- The trial studied perimenopausal women only; the authors state that trials in menopausal (postmenopausal) women are needed to establish efficacy beyond the perimenopausal population.
